The Power of Economic Strengthening

Since the introduction of Strengthening Resilient and Sustainable Systems project, many support groups within the network have not only strengthened their income-generating activities but have made remarkable strides in building financial resilience. One inspiring example comes from a support group within Oshikuku Constituency, where 23 members saved an impressive N$158,800.00 in only six months. This achievement was fueled by proceeds from their harvest in June. It is a powerful testament to what’s possible when communities are equipped with the right training, tools, and shared sense of commitment.

The solidarity built through VSL has proven powerful in supporting the livelihoods of each support group member. For example, after two members voiced financial struggles and fears over feeding their family, each member of the group contributed N$ 50.00 as a loan. The group also bought food for the two members as a form of motivation and to ensure that they had something to eat when taking their ART. This initiative boosted the entire group’s savings, while helping the two members who were struggling. As such, VSL does not only reduce stress but builds self-esteem, enhances economic empowerment, and improves mental health.

Collaboration with stakeholders has been especially successful  in strengthening  the support groups’ IGA. For example, collaboration with the Rural Development Centre through the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development led to capacity-building for support in the Ohangwena region. A training was held to equip members with practical skills in poultry farming and value addition techniques in guava and marula jam and juice production. These trainings enabled members to launch small businesses for sustainable income and promoted market access, increasing economic independence among vulnerable groups, particularly women and people with chronic conditions. Additionally, the training improved and diversified nutrition, as members now have access to protein from poultry and vitamins from fruits.

Across the network, support groups are increasingly engaging in economic strengthening activities and supporting one another to fight poverty. These efforts, such as the establishment of gardens, create a ripple effect of empowerment and shared prosperity, creating a means of generational well-being through food security.
