Empowering PWDs: Materials Handover Boosts Income-Generating Initiatives

A key achievement of Tonata’s programs has been the strengthening of support group–led income-generating activities (IGAs), which continue to serve as an effective pathway toward improved livelihoods, enhanced economic stability, and the promotion of self-sustaining practices. Through strategic partnerships with local and government stakeholders, Tonata has successfully expanded and diversified IGA opportunities, enabling support group members to build resilience and increase their economic participation.

On April 7th, this progress was marked by a ceremonial handover of materials to a support group of persons with disabilities (PWDs) to support their income-generating initiative, the Green Scheme Project. The donation, generously provided by the Ministry of Industrialization and Trade, amounted to over N$28,000 and included fencing, construction materials, and essential gardening equipment aimed at strengthening the group’s agricultural activities.

Keynote Address by Hon. Modestus Amutse

The ceremony was attended by Hon. Hofni Iipinge, Governor of Oshana Region, and Hon. Modestus Amutse, Minister of Industries, Mines, and Energy, alongside other government officials, community leaders, and support group members. Their presence underscored a shared commitment to inclusive economic empowerment and sustainable development.

Ms. Juliana Samuel, chairperson of the National Federation of People with Disabilities in Namibia (NFPDN), delivered a vote of thanks on behalf of the support group, expressing appreciation for the continued support and collaboration that make such initiatives possible while also highlighting the gaps that remain in advancing full inclusion and sustainable opportunities for persons with disabilities.

This milestone highlights the impact of collaborative efforts between community-based organizations and government partners in creating meaningful opportunities for persons with disabilities. By investing in locally driven initiatives such as the Green Scheme Project, stakeholders are not only supporting income generation but also fostering independence, dignity, and long-term community resilience.
